  17. <p>    Great white liberals have always been a rare species in
  18. South Africa. Their ranks, diminished by the death of author
  19. Alan Paton at 85 a year ago, are about to be thinned again.
  20. After 36 years of combat against the forces of apartheid in
  21. Parliament, Helen Suzman, 71, announced last week that she will
  22. not seek re-election in September.
  23. </p>
  24. <p>    For 13 years Suzman, a former university lecturer in
  25. economic history, was the only liberal opposition member of the
  26. house, making her the Progressive Party's spokeswoman. She
  27. slashed at purveyors of apartheid, once advising government
  28. ministers that they could learn something about their country
  29. if they would attend a funeral in a black township, "heavily
  30. disguised, of course, as human beings." But she opposed foreign
  31. economic sanctions against South Africa, arguing that they hurt
  32. blacks and drive whites into a siege mentality.
  33. </p>
  34. <p>    Suzman's retirement will take some steam out of the new
  35. Democratic Party, formed last month by the merger of three
  36. liberal parties and still unable to agree on a leader.
  37. Liberalism has a future in South Africa, says Suzman, but
  38. "fundamental changes will take a lot longer than most people
  39. think."
